As I sit here at my computer thinking about the benefits of ballroom dance I am reminded of many of my own experiences.

One such experience happened twelve years ago when I broke my back. I looked quite comical dragging my left leg and floppy foot around while I suffered from an excruciating sciatica 24/7. I remember being in denial at first and then finally I succumbed to visiting surgeons and scheduling surgery.

One of the first questions out of me was invariably, "Will I ever be able to dance again?". Each surgeon promised, hopefully, that I would at least be able to walk somewhat normally again.

I did the surgery and I started on the long rehabilitative road to "being able to dance again". I still don't have complete feeling back in my left foot but I can dance and walk normally. I even competed in American Smooth afterwards at local competitions!

Having that goal of wanting to be able to dance again helped me enormously...

It was good for my health since it kept me focused on rehabilitating, it was good for my heart because it gave me hope and it was good for my head because we all know what the idle brain can do given opportunity!
